One of the best ways to help yourself is to lift the burden of others and help those who are unable to help themselves. When I began volunteering, my intention was a bit selfish, I was at a low point in my life so I decided to give back to the community to help myself feel better. Now when I give of myself whether to help individuals or organizations I am interested in, I do it because I believe the choice to give of ourselves makes a real difference.
Ways you can make a difference:
Giving of yourself doesn’t have to be grand or time-consuming:
- open a door for someone
- smile when you pass people by
- let someone take that spot in line before you
- cook a meal for someone
- help someone in need across the street
- listen with compassion
- do yard work for an invalid or disabled person
- carry groceries
- feed a homeless animal
- donate funds to causes you believe in
- read to or mentor children
If you prefer to give more of your time through volunteering here is a website that lists charities and causes across the U.S. List of Nonprofit Organizations to help you find the right fit for you.
Giving kindness is free and a major force of change no matter how small the gesture. It is about the power of human connection and it has a domino effect. When you give, someone will be inspired by you to do the same. Giving selflessly empowers you to become all that you are meant to be.
There are so many good things about giving altruistically,
- you’ll learn something new
- develop skills that you didn’t know you had
- you’ll have fun
- feel a sense of purpose
- it helps heal a broken heart
Giving of yourself shifts your energy whenever your faced with life’s challenges, it redirects your attention to doing something positive and restorative not only for yourself but for everyone involved.
